Jakob Hoeft was born in the outskirts of Hamburg in 1916. His family fell on hard times like most families in Germany in the twenties, and Jakob began working in a factory at a young age. His family was working class, and they Jakob, like many Germans, worked very hard but did were not able to get by.
Jakob was swept up in the fever of 33, and joined the Hitler Youth. When he was old enough he became a party member, and became politically active in his local community. During this period, he was able to find solid work and him and his family were finally able to live comfortably.
After war broke out, Jakob decided to join the armed forces. Being a party member, he was more interested in the SS, and enlisted in 1940. After his training, he would be assigned to a recruit depot for the SS-Division "Totenkopf". He would eventually be assigned to 2./SS-Totenkopf-Infanterie-Regiment 1.
He would make it up to his assigned unit just in time to see the mopping up actions around Dunkirk. The French campaign for Jakob consisted of moving prisoners and getting a sight of thousands of destroyed allied vehicles and weapons. He did not see the death and destruction the other members of the unit had, he only saw the end result, the victory.
While stationed in Southern France, he was promoted to the rank of SS-Oberschutze.
Riding in a train with his company through East Prussia, prior to the Invasion of Russia, victory was all he saw in his future. The next few months, his mindset would change.
