Thomas Harger was born in Stuttgart during the First World War, in 1915. His father was fighting for the German Army at the time, and would be killed on the Western Front in 1918, leaving Thomas without ever knowing his father.
His mother tried to introduce several men in a fatherly role to Thomas, but all of them were either abusive or walked out on Thomas and his mother.
He left school at the age of 14 to work in a mill to help support his mother. He worked there, and at several other odd jobs through his teenage years but never made enough money to ever live comfortably.
When Adolf Hitler came to power, everything changed. Thomas found himself in new clothes for the first time in his life, and found himself in a position not only to support his mother, but to even buy an automobile.
