Rudolph Saumenicht was born February 13, 1916 in Hamburg.
He volunteered for the SS and was selected to undergo officer courses at SS -Junkerschule in Braunschweig. After graduating cadet school SS April 20, 1940, Rudolph was assigned to the SS Division "Totenkopf" with the rank of Untersturmführer.
The young officer was involved in the Anschluss of Austria and the occupation of the Sudetenland. He took part in the fighting on the Soviet-German front.
He commanded a platoon and then the 6. Kompanie, SS-PzG-Rgt. 5 - 3.SS-Division "Totenkopf".
In 1943, Rudolf commanded the 2nd company of the 3rd SS Panzer Regiment "Death's Head". During the operation "Citadel" Rudolph commanded a company (one of "Tiger", five Pz. IV and six Pz. III) and engaged in a tactical counter-attack of the Voronezh Front.
In a counterattack, his company had destroyed 42 Soviet tanks, the company's own losses were 2 tanks. On October 13, 1943, for his bravery and successful command on the battlefield, Rudolph was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.
In February 1944, Rudolf Saumenicht was transferred to the 5.SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking", where he commanded the 1. Battalion of the 5.SS-Panzer-Regiment.
He was killed in action Aug. 26, 1944 near Charnova on the Bug, forever remaining on the eastern front, like many of his comrades.
