Friedheim Gibb was born in the town of Dachau. As a young man he began playing piano, and even had dreams of becoming a famous piano player in an orchestra. His parents, like most parents in Germany, wanted structure for their young son and sent him into the Hitlerjugend.
He enjoyed the Hitlerjugend, and met many friends. As a young man growing up in the town of Dachau, he was familiar with the SS troops stationed in the city. However, he never learned about what exactly what kind of camp was located outside the city.
He also became familiar with troops of the SS-Totenkopfdivision, who were stationed there during the formation of the division. When all of his friends decided to join the SS, upon graduation from the Hitleryouth, Friedheim joined as well.
Friedheim was posted to the SS-Division "Totenkopf", which was at the time, gearing up for the invasion of Russia. Less than a month after being assigned to the Division, he was in the back of a truck, riding into Russia.
He had been assigned to a rifle company, and became an assistant machine-gunner, on a ZB-30 team. The SS-Totenkopfdivision was heavily armed with Czech Machine-guns during the invasion of Poland, France, and Russia. They would be phased out in the fall of 1942.
Friedheim participated in the assaults on Dagda, and the Stalin Line, and had his first taste of battle. He thought the war would be over soon, with the thousands of prisoners of war he passed on the side of the rode. His war had just begun.
