Born in Berlin, in 1922, Ludwig Schmidt was the son of a famous German Colonel of the Great War. His father stayed in the military after the war and Ludiwg grew up in a military family and always planned for the life of a soldier.
When the war broke out, Ludwig was in school, and his father wanted him to go to an Officer Academy and join the Heer and follow his father's footsteps. Instead, Ludwig chose to join the Waffen-SS. He enlisted in the SS in 1942, and joined the SS-Division "Totenkopf" as it was re-forming in France, following it's destruction in Demjansk.
He was among a large number of new faces to the Division, which would be led by the few survivors from the brutal encirclement. He was well liked by the men in his Zug, and was known to be clever and sarcastic. He and the rest of the new men would train and rebuild for several months in 1942 in France. The Division would soon see action again, and be sent back to Russia, to continue to take part in some of the war's most brutal fights.
Lawson's first serious action would be around the Russian city of Kharkov, and as he approached the city in the winter riding in one of his unit's halftracks, he knew this would be his true test, as to whether he could live up to his father's honor from The Great War.
